ABOUT US

A small charity with a big heart

Our mission is to help homeless cats have a chance at a better life.

The shelter is located in central Malmö and provides food, veterinary care, love, attention, and a temporary home for 10 cats at a time until we can find forever homes for them. 

Run by volunteers, the shelter strive to offer underserved cats with a homely environment where they can feel safe and build up their confidence before being adopted.

Our operation relies entirely on private donations and the immense dedication of our volunteers. We are so grateful for any support you can provide us.

How do we carry our mission?

  • We give homeless cats a cozy temporary home until we can find them the perfect forever home.

  • We provide these cats with food, shelter and veterinary care.

  • We socialize the cats so that they build trust and feel comfortable around people.

  • We make possible the adoption of these cats by carefully selected forever home.

  • We offer support to a network of other local cat associations and help groups.

  • We help cats in the immediate area by capturing them, providing them with veterinary care and finding temporary foster homes or permanent homes.

  • We build small winter homes so homeless cats can find a warm place to sleep during the cold months when many cats do not survive.

How can you help support our mission?

  • SPREAD INFORMATION around you about how important it is toneuter your cat to avoid the rapidly increasing number of cats born homeless or abandoned.

  • ADOPT, DON’T SHOP. Have a look at our cats available for ADOPTION.

  • BE A FOSTER HOME by temporarily taking care of a cat in need. LiFeline covers the costs of veterinary care for these cats. All we ask is that someone gives up their home and love.

  • BECOME A VOLUNTEER with us. Our volunteers sign up in shifts at LiFeline where they feed and play with the cats, keep the shelter clean and cozy. We may also need help from time to time to transport cats or supplies.

About the Association

LiFeline Syd is a non-profit association dedicated to protecting vulnerable cats in Malmö. Our purpose is to promote the status and welfare of cats, increase awareness of responsible pet ownership, and help reduce the number of homeless and unwanted cats in the city.

We have held a permit under Section 16 (§16) from the County Administrative Board since October 2018. In 2024, we underwent and passed an inspection by the County Administrative Board. Chairperson Yvonne Norheim is the designated person responsible for animal welfare in relation to the County Administrative Board and completed an external certified training course in 2018.

Our organisation number is 802500-8254, and we are registered with the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket) and the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket).

We do not conduct commercial sales. When a cat is adopted, the new owner makes an agreed donation to the association.

Activities During 2025

Throughout the year, our work has continued with a strong focus on providing safe and consistent care for the cats in our responsibility. Our shelter has been staffed every morning and evening thanks to the remarkable commitment of more than 25 volunteers from over 10 different countries – a reflection of the diversity and solidarity that characterise our association.

Membership and engagement

The association currently has seven members, but we recognise the need to grow our membership. We have therefore begun reviewing how we can better inform our more than 20 active volunteers about the importance of becoming members, both in terms of having a voice in the association and contributing to its long-term stability. We also continue to see a trend where many people prefer to support us financially without becoming formal members.

Each year, the association invites members, volunteers, and interested members of the public to open-house events in April and December. During these events, we present our activities, answer questions, and welcome suggestions. The Board is presented and elected by the members in attendance.

As in previous years, the membership fee is paid in cash. We have now established an emergency fund of SEK 3,500, intended for essential supplies in accordance with the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency’s (MSB) recommendations on crisis preparedness.

Special events and initiatives

  • Number of adoptions: 42 cats

  • Increased demand for assistance: The association continues to receive a high number of requests for help. This may partly be explained by the lasting effects of the pandemic, during which many people acquired pets.

  • Christmas Open House: Held before Christmas with good attendance. Several new volunteers expressed an interest in joining us.

  • Volunteer gatherings: Our traditional autumn meeting for volunteers was held in October and was particularly appreciated by newer members.

  • Reviews of routines and procedures: Eugenia has held weekend sessions for volunteers covering routines, procedures, and rules. These sessions have been well received and are planned to continue on a regular basis.

Finances

The association is primarily funded through donations from the public and adoption fees. We do not conduct regular commercial sales; however, most people who collect one of our calendars choose to donate between SEK 150 and SEK 300.

When particularly costly veterinary treatment has been required, we have organised targeted fundraising campaigns through social media. Throughout these campaigns, we have maintained transparency and provided live updates on the amounts raised. This approach has received very positive feedback from our followers.

Future Focus – 2025 and Beyond

Looking ahead, we particularly want to focus on:

  • Understanding the increasing need for assistance among families required to leave Sweden following deportation decisions: We saw a significant increase in such cases during 2025 and want to provide support wherever possible.

  • Securing resources: We need to find a reliable and affordable supplier of cat litter and identify new ways of financing increasing veterinary costs.
